Matthew 23:11
But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
Romans 12:16
Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
Condescension sounds so bloated. Perhaps the scripture can be taken as the condescender would condescend himself to become a man of low estate. I suppose people would consider that a semantic “game” and yet it can be taken that way and it certainly falls into the realm of possibility that it should be taken that way given the subject matter. But yet and still the plain rendering is for the condescender to condecend to men who are of low estate. Perhaps the publicans, our enemies and those in whose company Jesus was often as a “winebibber and a glutton” would fall into this category. Do we have friends in low places who might benefit from the Gospel?
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. 19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
