Mike,
I don’t totally agree with your believe that if we don’t do as the “authority” asks, we are in rebellion to God. The “authority” is bounded by the Constitution. This country is a Constitution Republic and “We the people” are the authorities and the “authorities” are the public servants. Most Pastors use Romans 13 like Hitler used to pacify Christians (FEMA Clergy Response Team). I am sure you know about the Book of Judges right? The whole book is about God anointed judges after judges to deliver the Israelites from their rulers (rebellion!). All Israel except Judah rebelled against Rehoboam the son of Solomon in 1 Kings is another example:
1Ki 12:3 That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,
1Ki 12:4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.
1Ki 12:19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
1Ki 12:24 Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.
Before we starting to judge people in “rebellion”, we have to think if it is from the LORD.
God created a structure of authority like Roman 13 talks about BUT that’s conditional…
Rom 13:3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
Rom 13:4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
The rulers are not a terror to good works and minister of God for good. What happens when the rulers are terror to good works? That authority is not anointed by God. It’s called false authority or counterfeit as the Antichrist is a counterfeit to Jesus Christ. And if we say like most Christians says “that’s of the Lord” while our wives and children get rape and do nothing, we don’t understand the Bible completely. Our wives and children get rape and killed not because the actions were anointed by God but because we did nothing. We make free choices and face consequences, God works around our choices. He is not our puppet master. He leads, guides, and corrects… but He is not a control freak!
